Training for universities

Arlene has run some very successful Classics education information and training events for undergraduate and postgraduate students. These range from one hour seminars to whole day events. Some of the topics are listed below, but Arlene is always willing to design new training to meet the specific needs of individual university departments/faculties.

  • An overview of UK education system (including a summary of exam levels)
  • The role of Classics in UK Education (policy, primary, secondary and school types)
  • Classical subjects – what do students learn, and when?
  • Training to teach Classics: routes available, fees and application processes
  • Classics, 21st century skills and employability
  • Classical rhetoric and contemporary communication: a workshop
  • What might be the future of Classics education, and why does it matter?
  • Online, distance and blended approaches to Classics education: challenges and triumphs

Feedback from participants

‘I really enjoyed today’s session on Classical rhetoric. It was thought-provoking and useful’, Classics PGCE student, University of Cambridge

‘It was helpful to consider looking at techniques in modern speeches before teaching Cicero. It has been valuable to learn more about Classical rhetoric from someone who is a ‘double-pro’ (Classics and education)!’, Classics PGCE student, University of Cambridge

‘I would definitely recommend this ‘Classics and UK education’ event to other students. Arlene delivered hugely informative and interesting sessions. Can we have more events like this please, with Arlene?’ Robin, UCL undergraduate student.

‘Everything was excellent. I don’t have any suggestions for improvement.’ Nebojsa, UCL undergraduate student.

‘I am going to more seriously consider teaching after University. KCL appeals more now. It was great to have Arlene explain the different routes into teaching. I liked how flexible she was about the schedule and how she kept everyone’s attention the whole day. This event surpassed my expectations’. Rebecca, KCL undergraduate student.

‘The room was convenient, the lunch was a nice surprise and Arlene was a pleasure to listen to, and very interesting. Her willingness and ability to answer questions about all areas of Classics teaching was impressive – a direct result, I assume, of the sheer breadth and depth of her expertise.’ Claire, UCL postgraduate student.
